Rev. Dr. Joseph P. Lee Jr.,
Pastor
On June 1, 2008, Reverend Doctor Joseph P. Lee, Jr., became the 17th pastor of the Historic Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church of Norfolk, Virginia. A native of Richmond, Virginia, Reverend Lee has dedicated his life to preaching, teaching, and evangelical outreach ministry. He has thoroughly prepared himself for the ministry. He was licensed and ordained at Cedar Street Baptist Church, Richmond, Virginia. He has received degrees from J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College, University of Richmond’s E. Claiborne Robins School of Business, Richmond Virginia Seminary, Virginia Union University’s Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology, and he earned his Doctor of Ministry from United Theological Seminary, in Trotwood, Ohio.

He was the pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Lanexa, Virginia, located in New Kent County, for 13 years. In addition to Reverend Lee’s administrative and spiritual responsibilities, he also served as executive producer for the church’s radio and television ministry. He served the New Kent and Richmond communities as Chaplain of the Cumberland Children’s Hospital, New Kent County, and as an Associate Minister at Cedar Street Baptist Church in Richmond. At Cedar Street, he served as youth and prison minister, junior missionary sponsor, Sunday School teacher, and conducted bible study for the 3500-member church.

Reverend Lee had generously given his time to the Richmond community in varying ways, to include being a member of Neighborhood Housing Services of Richmond, and an Alcohol and Substance Abuse Sponsor and Program Developer in New Kent County. He has held memberships in the Baptist Minister’s Conference of Richmond and Vicinity and other organizations.

Over the years, he has received letters of recognition and honors from local and state government officials and has worked closely with local school and government officials to educate middle and high school students about the detrimental effects of substance abuse. Among his other activities, Reverend Lee has been and is an instructor in various areas. He taught business administration and served as a substitute teacher in homiletics at the Richmond Virginia Seminary and the Evans Smith School of Theology. He is currently an instructor for the Church Leadership Conference, which is sponsored by the Baptist General Convention.

Reverend Lee has professional experience as the owner/operator of an insurance agency and as a managerial professional in several jobs within the insurance industry. He served his country for six years as a member of the United States Marine Corps Reserve.

From a personal perspective, Reverend Lee, age 49, and his wife, Kimberly, a high school assistant principal, have three sons, Joseph, Jonathan, and Joshua, ages 12, 9, and 7 respectively. Joseph and Jonathan perform with the Richmond’s Boy’s Choir and have had the opportunity to perform at the White House for First Lady Laura Bush. In his free time, Reverend Lee enjoys music, poetry, reading, creative writing, and spending time with the family.

He is extremely excited about the vision and ministry that God has called him to encounter at Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church. His favorite scripture is Matthew 28:19-20, and he has accepted the call to continue to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ throughout the entire world!
